Dr. Kent Mercado Medical Missions

A Pillar in the Medical Community
There are very few individuals in the health care field that hold a dual degree in medicine and law.    Dr. O. Kent Mercado is much sought after to serve on hospital and health care committees. He presently sits on numerous hospitals and managed care boards and past liaison between the Illinois Bar Association and the legislation committee in Springlfield, Illinois. He is the Medical Director of the Zacatacas Medical Mission in Mexico and has recently returned from a Medical Mission in Haiti to perform surgery with a team of nine doctors. He has been instumentalal in procurring medical and surgical supplies for medical missions in Bolivia, Dominican Republic, Mexico, and with the help of his neighbors, was able to send over $1,000,000 worth of supplies to earthquake ravaged Haiti. He also helped facilitate the largest private donation of medical supplies to the flood relief efforts in Pakistan.

Mercado Food and Ankle Clinic was founded in 1964 by Dr. O. A. Mercado, Professor Emeritus and internationally renowned author and lecturer, soon after the conclusion of his service as an army doctor at Kimbrough Army Hospital, Fort Meade, Maryland. Through hard work, innovative management, and successful growth, the group has become one of the leading foot and ankle centers in Illinois. The Mercado Center for Foot & Ankle Surgery in Oak Park was one of the country's first office-based podiatric surgical facilities to be accredited by the Joint Commission for Accreditation of Health Organizations. The practice expanded to now five locations: Oak Park, Carol Stream, Berwyn and Naperville.

Dr. Kent Mercado joined his father in practice in July of 1990. He graduated from the Ohio College of Podiatric Medicine, where he was awarded the Ohio Podiatric Medical Association's Community Service Award and the college's coveted Surgical Proficiency Award. He served his residency in foot and ankle surgery at Saint Mary of Nazareth Medical Center in Chicago. He has received intensive training at Presbyterian Hospital Center, a Stanford University affiliate in San Francisco and Mount Sinai Hospital in Chicago, as well as specialty training in hyperbaric oxygen therapy for diabetic wound care. He also holds a degree in law from John Marshall Law School.

Dr. Mercado has lectured widely on foot and ankle surgery, most recently at the University of Barcelona in Spain, and has contributed chapters for several podiatric medical textbooks and most recently to a Medical Law text. In addition, he is a member of the surgical team of the popular Art of Surgery video series. He is the co-founder of the Physicians Focus Group.
 

About Dr. Kent Mercado
Dr. Mercado enjoys physical fitness. He is an expert swimmer and bicyclist who has participated in many triathalon races and has run up the John Hancock Building (87 stories high) in 15 minutes, one of the best times for his age group. He is also a gourmet cook who enjoys having cookouts with this wife and three children. Dr. Mercado has been a Naperville resident for more than thirteen years.

In his forty years of practice, Dr. O. A. Mercado's influence in the field of podiatric medicine has been considerable, having lectured extensively both nationally and internationally. Many of the techniques that he developed for foot and ankle surgery are standards in the profession, such as his techniques for bunions, heel spurs and ankle stabilization.

He was Professor of Surgery at the Scholl College of Podiatric Medicine where he taught hundreds of students. For over twenty-five years he headed a Podiatric Surgical Residency program training young men and women in the art of podiatric surgery.

Dr. Mercado has written six books and is the best selling author in his field of expertise.
An Atlas of Podiatric Anatomy and An Atlas of Foot Surgery, Vols. I & II are considered classics. The Journal of Canadian Podiatric Medicine wrote "students without this text are depriving themselves of a proper surgical education. Indeed, many podiatrists consider this textbook as their bible for surgery."

He is also the host of the nationally distributed surgical video series entitled, The Art of Surgery. The entire series as well as his major writings have been translated into Spanish for international distribution.

Dr. Mercado has been honored by his peers fro his great achievements in the profession by being inducted into the Podiatric Hall of Fame for his lifetime contributions to podiatric surgery. In 2001, he was selected by the Management Journal as one of America's Most Influential Foot and Ankle Surgeons.

Dr. Mercado loves to travel, something he gets to do frequently with his active lecture schedule.

 

Dr. Cynthia M. Mercado Ciessau

Dr. Cindy, as she is affectionately referred to by the staff and patients, wanted to be a podiatrist since she was a small child. She actually started helping her father at the Clinic when she was only 13 years old. She finally joined the practice as a full-fledged doctor in July 1992.

She graduated from the Ohio College of Podiatric Medicine in 1990 with two of its top honors;   the Ohio Podiatric Medical Association Service Award and the Gafford Ethics Award.

Dr. Mercado served a two-year surgical residency at Saint Mary of Nazareth Hospital Center. She has also had additional training in microsurgery at the University of Kentucky Medical School, and internal fixation surgery. She has received Laser Surgery and CPR Certification.

Dr. Mercado is a frequent lecturer to professional and lay groups and is a mentor for health care students and residents. She has authored chapters for two major podiatric book publications and has written extensively on Accrediting Office Based Surgical Facilities. She currently serves on an advisory committee for the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Health Maintenance Organizations. In addition she is part of the surgical team for the popular Art of Surgery video series.

She is the Co-Chairperson of the Podiatric Surgery Section of Saint Mary of Nazareth Medical Center; the past president of Zone I of the Illinois Podiatric Medical Association; and the co-founder of the Physicians Focus Group.

When she is not being a doctor, Dr. Mercado¹s outside interest span a wide range. First and foremost, she is mother to fourteen-year-old boy and girl twins. When she is not being a mom and wife, she enjoys bicycling and is pursuing a black belt in Tae Kwan Do. She is a voracious reader and particularly enjoys reading about business. Many of the management ideas that she has learned have gone to help improve the quality of the service at the Mercado Foot and Ankle Clinics. She is also an art lover and a great fan of the French Impressionist painters.

 

Dr. Michael J. Smith

Dr. Michael Smith wanted to be a doctor since he was six years old. He worked his way through college and medical school, holding various jobs to support his dreams.

He attended Western Illinois University, where he made the Dean's Honor List, and graduated in 1996. He is a graduate of the Scholl College of Podiatric Medicine where he was awarded the Teacher's Scholarship.

He received his Doctor of Podiatric Medicine in 2000 and served a two-year surgical residency at Saint Mary of Nazareth Medical Center. Dr. Smith joined the surgical staff of Mercado Foot & Ankle Clinics in July of 2002. In addition to his surgical skills, he brings to our clinics a special expertise in Diabetic Wound Care as well as a warm and caring personality.

Dr. Smith is a talented artist who draws beautiful portraits in pencil. Some of his art work is hanging in the Oak Park office, where it brings great pleasure to both the patients and staff.

In his spare time, he also enjoys reading science fiction, mysteries and the great classics, including "Moby Dick", "Great Expectations" as well as the works of Shakespeare and Mark Twain.
